journal entry six [Feb. 25th, 2010|10:50 am]
[Tags|]

[Paper journal. Black gel pen. Written in Teeline, in the usual custom. Entry dated the after his first day at Piedmont, obviously written before that evening, when arguments with Vaughn lead to Boyd and Rosalie's visit. This date is vigorously crossed out, and a new date is written, the day after, when, presumably, Rosalie left. Obviously just before Boyd is discovered missing. There are no newspaper clippings, because the forwarding Vlad set up hadn't kicked in yet. He includes a piece of paper from a complimentary tablet he found in the kitchen, and it has Piedmont's logo inscribed on the top.]

Glad I thought to bring a new journal rather than an old one. Don't think I'd want to read anything I wrote before I came here, what there is of it. Starting to cut my hair early this afternoon since it was itching, and the housekeeper caught me in the hall bathroom chopping and made such a racket I let her fuss and prune. She insisted I would cut it too short, though I haven't the foggiest idea what she's talking about. As soon as it gets long enough to curl it starts driving me absolutely crazy, and the last thing I need are more experiences that make me crazy. There's no such thing as too short as long as I don't have a razor.

She's gone now, bustled off to some other villa to clean and make sure they're still kicking. I wonder if she heckles them too, or if it's just because I speak Italian? Language--seems with Rosalie [The words trail off here, as if he began another sentence, but was interrupted. The following is scrawled in short bursts.]

Sh. says A. missing, going to run basic search re: public area notifs.

[Here follows a list of police stations and hospitals in the area. There's a change of style, the hand weaker and letters tilting, probably after they discovered where she was.]

[Entry dated the night when this is received, that is, probably after these notations were made--November 2. Notably, before any difficulties with mail.

News clippings included: this one, this one, and this one.]

Haven't decided what to do about the books. Not the same handwriting as the letters, and Pi. is clever, but in a different way. Don't know how to return them. I shouldn't return them, it will encourage her. Should I not take them? Leave them out in the hallway?I could ask Pi--he hasn't said anything to anyone about anything, which surprises me. Sometimes I wait for him to, and he never does. I don't understand it. If he doesn't want to tell, why does he want to know?

Why does she want to know?

I'm not sure I believe in dreams, either. I don't want to.

[Entry dated November 3. After the problems with the mail, and after a short intermission. Significantly, this is not in Teeline. No articles are included. ]

I'm not sure what it is. [Something crossed out effusively here.] I can't be sure what it is about it that's scary. It could be because it's not just one animal, it's a bunch of them. Like a werewolf that's not just a wolf. It's probably about the size of an adult grizzly standing up, if grizzlies were as short as I am.

The fur is what would be dirty blond on a human, thick and brown close to the skin, but almost tawny when it shortens up the neck and cheekbones. (Is it cheekbones? I don't know animal physiology, I never [This sentence doesn't continue.] Forehead is angled and long, like a lion's, and the bridge of the nose dips inward rather than sliding out the way a bear's would. I think the nose is a dog's, wet and long and black, and it would be completely disgusting if it wasn't for the tongue and the teeth. I think the tongue is pink, though I might just label it pink when I wake up, if the dream is black and white, but if it's not pink it's still long and wide, and if I had to guess I'd say it was a lion's tongue and not a dog's. I've never seen a bear's tongue. The ears, at least, are like a labrador's, if a lab had fur that dark and soft. Maybe a little smaller than a labrador's, set farther back on the head.

The face is feline. This is the most confused thing I've ever written. It doesn't have whiskers like lions do, but it's got that funny square-shaped snout big cats have. Maybe tigers--but no stripes. Maybe a mountain lion. I saw a mountain lion once. I think that was California after college. Was it? I can't remember. If I can't remember how do I dream it? It has a lion's mane, anyway, like an afterthought. Lion's claws, if there was such a thing as a lion as big as a bear. It runs like a big cat, not a bear or a dog. Bears lumber, dogs trot, this thing lopes. Does it have a tail? I don't think I've ever been behind it. It's always coming at me, straight on.

It has my eyes.
